Maximize your use of prime real estate

"This is defined by the space in between your knees and your shoulders" says Lisa Zaslow of Gotham Organizers. In other words, the easiest places to reach. Out of sight out of mind, so keep your most frequently used items in your prime real estate.
Tips:
  • Think about what you reach for most often. Those go in your prime real estate storage spaces.
  • "Out of sight, out of mind," remindsZaslow. If you want something to remain part of your life, store it where you see it often.

Think vertically

Most people think in terms of left to right, but don't discount that space above your head and at your feet. These are a great places to store out-of-season, holiday, or little-used and worn items.
Tips:
  • Do invest in a sturdy step ladder to allow you to reach this area.
  • Don't store anything too heavy up above--not boxes full of books or large appliances!
  • Don't store anything you use regularly above your eye-line. Remember: Out of sight equals out of mind.

Choose the right products for your unique space

Triple measure your storage spaces before buying bins, trays or racks. There's nothing more frustrating than getting home and having to shove a container into a closet to make it fit. Storage products should fit your stuff, your stuff shouldn't have to fit whatever you buy on a whim. Plan ahead.
Tips:
  • Carry a note card with the measurements of your closets in your wallet. (see more tips like this in Household Organizing Tips)
  • Once again, try to use products that nest together. They will stack more easily.
  • Make sure they are clear and labeled.

Always label for easy retrieval

I always thought label makers were for the organization freaks amongst us, but now that I have my own, I'm slightly obsessed with my label maker. It's endlessly useful and gives home organization a very polished and professional look. Plus, it saves me from having to decipher my terrible handwriting!

You Just Moved. Now What?

  • Allied

The hardest part is over. You've packed up your entire house and had it delivered to your new place. But after the moving truck leaves and the dust settles, you’re left with an unfinished home-and a LOT of boxes. So what do you do first?
1.  You want your new place to be safe and secure—start with the locks. If the previous residents or owners did not change the locks, make sure to do this first. And if the garage has a code, don’t forget to reset that, too! You can rest easier knowing that no one has the keys to your new place except you.
2.  Next, tackle the most important boxes first. Unpacking every room of your house will take a huge amount of your time, so make sure that you start with the most important rooms first—namely, the kitchen, bathroom(s) and the bedroom essentials. That way, you have everything you absolutely need ready to go while you take time to unpack everything else.
3.  Once you have those set up, make sure that you have all of your utilities in place. Test out your internet, electric, heat, etc. to make sure that everything is ready to go.
4.  Don’t forget to register your vehicle(s) if you’ve moved states, provinces or countries! Taking care of this ASAP will help you avoid hassles later down the road.
5.  Enjoy your new home!

How to Pack Medium-Sized Boxes:

Knowing how to pack things the right way before you start packing is extremely important for a smooth move. Here at 123 Moving and Storage we try our best to prepare our current and prospective clients for any move. In this post we will be focusing on how to pack medium sized boxes. Medium sized boxes are industry standard sized boxes that can be used for a number of common household items. After following these simple tips you’ll feel like an expert medium-sized-box-packer!
Medium boxes are the easiest and fastest boxes to pack. They carry large and durable items, for example pillows, blankets, and linens. Medium boxes come in a variety of sizes, but the two most common sizes are the 3.0 carton (18″ x18″ x16″ cubic feet) and the 4.5 carton (18″ x18″ x24″ cubic feet). Each box is packed similarly, but the 4.5 box’s are generally used for lighter and larger objects that would take up too much space in a 3.0 box.
Items Packed into a Medium Sized Box:
  • Pots
  • Pans
  • Trays
  • Shoes
  • Games
  • Toys
  • Folded Clothes
  • Linens
  • Pillows
  • Blankets
  • Towels
  • Small appliances
  • Stereo Components
  • Speakers
  • Large Lampshades
Packing paper is your FRIEND: To protect the items inside the box, start packing every box with a layer of crumpled paper at the bottom. And make sure to add another layer of crumpled packing paper to the top before closing the box. Soft items like pillows, towels and clothes can be set in box without any packing paper. When it comes to packing small appliances or electronic components, you should wrap the items with packing paper to provide extra protection. Pots and pans do not need to be individually wrapped, just add crumpled packing paper around them once inside the box to prevent them from moving around. If you are packing fragile items, such as glass dishes or vases, it is best to pack them in a dish pack instead of a medium sized box for protection reasons. Lamp shades should be packed in their own box comfortably without any additional items. Add lots of crumpled paper to protect the lampshade.
By following these tips you can rest assured that your items will be safe during your upcoming move. Be sure to check out our website for more information on moving and storage. Good luck with your packing!
